Join us in celebrating the diversity of God's Creation through music, dance, and the spoken word.
Since medieval times in Europe, churches have been the crowning glory of any city.
These buildings were more than a place of worship. They were the heart of the community's
culture and society - offering a setting where architects, artists, and musicians presented
their masterworks.
Bells Corners United Church is a unique structure within the community, and indeed within the
city of Ottawa. Its large convex roof of cedar shingles meant to evoke the image of praying hands, is very distinctive! The building was
designed in 1961 by architect James Strutt, a leading proponent of Canadian Modernism. He is
noted for novel and evocative expression of structure, as well as his use of natural finishes.
Bells Corners United Church is an outstanding example of his work, and one of the City's finest
Modernist buildings of this period.
A new Entry, and Narthex and balcony reconfiguration was designed
by Peter J. Kindree, and completed in 2006. The materials, structural rhythms,
and Modernist esthetic of the original Church were emulated in the design,
and it won a City of Ottawa Architectural Award. The Entry emphasizes the
use of glass, and its high central space provides a spiritual core with
clerestory windows allowing the light and activity within the Church to
stream out and act as a beacon to the community.
BCUC offers concerts and other artistic events to the public, making it a place where members
of the entire community - audiences and artists alike, can come to fulfill themselves culturally and
educationally. And for those who so choose - spiritually as well.
BCUC welcomes many community groups and visitors throughout the year - some on a regular
basis and others for single events. To sustain a secure, comfortable and welcoming environment for everyone,
a series of Community Concerts is offered in a tradition respected since the Middle Ages. The uplifting
interior compliments the experience, adding to the enjoyment. Any profit realized from these endeavours supports
the maintenance, renewal, and capital expenditures of the facility.
